SAYREVILLE – A former Sayreville Borough Councilman has rejoined the governing body.
Dave McGill was named to the council on Nov. 26 and sworn in that evening following the resignation of Councilman Ricci Melendez. Melendez resigned from his position on Nov. 21.
As Melendez is a Democrat, the local Democratic Party had the duty to nominate three individuals to replace him on the council and fill his unexpired term. The names submitted by Democratic officials were McGill, William Henry and Kenneth Scott.
“We appreciate all the names that were put in and were brought forth,” Council President Victoria Kilpatrick said. “They were excellent candidates.”
“All of the people who are listed here are well-qualified and we’re just very fortunate to have such talented people who we could nominate,” Councilwoman Mary Novak said.
After the three candidates were provided to the governing body, Kilpatrick made a motion to accept McGill to fill Melendez’s unexpired term, which was approved by Kilpatrick, Novak and Councilmen Daniel Buchanan and Steven Grillo.
“I’d like to welcome our new councilman and I’m looking forward to working with you,” Novak said.
“I want to echo Councilwoman Novak’s welcome of Councilman McGill and thank him for his continued service to our community,” Grillo said.
The council’s action marked a return to a seat on the governing body for McGill, who had previously served on the council from 2013-15 and had campaigned with Melendez in 2012 and 2015.
A resident of Sayreville for 26 years, he moved to the borough after retiring from the City of New York Police Department and also worked in the produce industry.
The term that McGill was appointed to will expire by the end of 2019 and appear on the ballot in that year’s November election as a full three-year term. McGill may seek election to the full term.
