A man from Woodbridge has pleaded guilty in causing the death of his 27-year-old passenger on May 6 while driving while intoxicated.
Tayib Mahmood, 29, the operator of the car, pleaded guilty on Nov. 29 to vehicular homicide and driving while intoxicated, according to information provided by Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey.
Under a plea agreement reached with Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Keith Abrams, Mahmood will be sentenced to a prison term of 7 years for causing the crash that killed Tahir Jamile, 27, of the Colonia section of Woodbridge, while driving in Piscataway. This term is subject to the No Early Release Act; as such, the defendant will have to serve 85 percent of his prison term before becoming eligible for parole.
The defendant was charged following an investigation by Sgt. Constance Crea of the Piscataway Police Department and Detective Erik Larsen of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.
The investigation determined that in the early morning hours of May 6, Mahmood was driving a 2014 Toyota Camry when he hit a concrete barrier on Stelton Road near Jessie Way and the car caught fire, according to the statement. Jamile was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mahmood is scheduled to be sentenced in New Brunswick by Superior Court Judge Michael A. Toto on Feb. 11.
