METUCHEN — A 27-year-old Philadelphia man was charged with allegedly possessing a “ghost gun” along with hollow point ammunition following a motor vehicle stop last week, according to Police Chief David Irizarry.

A firearm, known as a “ghost gun,” is manufactured in way that allows the firearm to be unidentifiable and untraceable, police said.

The man was charged with possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of hollow point rounds and possession of a controlled dangerous substance, police said.

Two other men in the vehicle, a 28-year-old and a 27-year-old, also from Philadelphia, were charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, police said.

During the motor vehicle stop, which occurred on New Durham Road on Dec. 6, police reportedly recovered a black semi-automatic handgun loaded with six hollow point rounds, according to officials.

“When officers were making the weapon safe they noticed that in the area where the serial number is usually affixed, it was blank,” Irizarry said, adding marijuana was also found during a search of the vehicle.

The man in possession of the “ghost gun” was released from custody after his Middlesex County Superior Court Detention hearing in New Brunswick on Dec. 7, police said. The other two men were released after they were processed and given court dates.

The investigation is active and ongoing. Anyone with information should call Detective Joseph Keane of the Metuchen Police Department at 732-632-8501.
