PHS girls capture Monroe hoops tourney; MHS teams win twice

The Princeton High girls’ basketball team captured the championship of the Monroe Holiday Tournament with a 47-46 overtime victory over Steinert in the championship game last Saturday.

Catherine Dyevich led the Little Tigers with 11 points, while Erin Devine scored nine. Princeton, which improved to 5-1, opened the tournament with a 40-32 victory over Monroe. Dyevich led the Little Tigers with 15 points.

Stuart Country Day reached the finals of its own holiday tournament before falling to Trenton Catholic, 76-55, in the championship game. Nia Melvin scored 20 points and Bey-Shana Clark added 18 in the loss for the Tartans, who fell to 8-3 on the season. Stuart reached the finals with victories over Pingry and Winslow. Melvin recorded 18 points in a 73-48 victory over Pingry in the opening round. Melvin scored 16 and Clark sank 14 in a 41-25 triumph over Winslow in the semifinals.

The Montgomery girls picked up a pair of victories at the Vaughn Stapleton Holiday Classic in Bridgewater. The Cougars topped Bridgewater-Raritan, 56-46, and Westampton Tech, 64-41, in the round-robin event. Bria Johnson led the scoring with 12 points in the victory over Bridgewater-Raritan, while Abby March connected for 18 points and Kate Heidt scored 16 in the decision over Westampton Tech. The Cougars are now 4-1.

The Montgomery boys basketball team picked up a pair of victories at the Vaughn Stapleton Holiday Classic in Bridgewater. The Cougars opened the round-robin event with a 68-48 victory over Bridgewater-Raritan before topping Medford Tech, 83-34. Joe Elicone sank 18 points against Bridgewater-Raritan, while Kevin Fromelt had 21 and Rohan Prakash scored 18 in the victory over Medford Tech. Montgomery is now 5-1 on the season.

The Princeton boys topped Nutley, 71-64, in the consolation game of the Charlie Doran Holiday Classic at Kearny. Princeton had dropped a 61-50 decision to Kearny in the opening round. The Little Tigers are no 2-3 on the season.

The Princeton Day School boys topped Robbinsville, 67-52, in the consolation game of the Monroe Holiday Tournament. David Coit scored 31 points and Freddie Young put in 16 in the victory. The Panthers, who are 7-4, had opened the tournament with a 90-82 loss to Brick Township. Coit fired in 34 points and Young recorded 28 in the loss.
