TOMS RIVER – The Ocean County Library will open its doors to a new program this month called “Teddy Bear Building for Adults with Special Challenges.”

On Jan. 22, adults with special challenges will have the opportunity to build a teddy bear.

“My colleague, Meagan Harrison, who works at the Jackson branch, creates wonderful programs for adults with special challenges and she recommended the workshop. It was successful there, so with her guidance, we decided we would offer it here at Toms River,” said Adult Services Librarian Colleen Goode, who coordinates the event.

Goode said Debbie Pease, from Premiere Picnics and Parties, will guide the attendees. Each participant will have a hands-on experience and be able to take home their bear at the end of the program.

“This is the first time we are hosting this workshop at the Toms River branch. We have room for 20 people to attend. So far, 11 people have registered, but we expect more to sign up as the date gets closer,” Goode said.

She said she hopes people take away the experience of creating something special for themselves or a loved one.

“This workshop should be a lot of fun. The presenter is very engaging. She loves sharing her skills, she connects with each person in a special way and works hard to create a memorable experience,” Goode said.

It has taken almost three months for Goode and the library to prepare for this event.

“There is a strong interest in developing programs for adults with special challenges throughout the entire library system. Here in Toms River, we have regular visits from groups serving adults with special challenges and we want to offer programs that are interactive, entertaining and informative,” she said.

She said moving forward there will be other programs such as this one offered for adults with special challenges.
