The New Jersey European Heritage Association, which is a white supremacist group, has apparently called off its planned rally set for today, Jan. 12, in Tiger Park on Palmer Square in Princeton, claiming that it never intended to carry out the event.
A tweet posted on its Twitter account Friday afternoon said, “You’ve been punk’d,” or fooled. The tweet also thanked its opponents for “making us a household name” and for driving people to its website.
“This exercise demonstrates that the so-called ‘tolerant’ phony privileged limousine liberals of Princeton have no respect for freedom of speech. We are a peaceful, law-abiding group. We respect and honor law enforcement,” the tweet said.
The Princeton Police Department was gearing up for the rally, and had announced plans to close off Palmer Square and Hulfish Street to all motor vehicles beginning at 5 a.m. on the day of the rally. Nassau Street also was to be closed off between University Place and Witherspoon Street.
In a Facebook post earlier this week, Princeton Mayor Liz Lempert wrote that the group “has a right to free speech, no matter how despicable their message of hate, bigotry and ignorance. We stand in opposition to this twisted attempt to spew hate.”
