During an Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony on Jan. 6, Freehold Boy Scout Troop 18 members William Foley, 19, Anthony Atkinson, 17, and Jared Markunas, 18, received their Eagle Scout awards.

William is the son of Kevin and Mary Foley of Freehold Township, Anthony is the son of
Gary and Nancy Atkinson of Freehold Township, and Jared is the son of David and Irene Markunas of Millstone Township.

The Court of Honor ceremony was held at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Freehold Borough, according to a press release.

William’s Eagle Scout project was to design and lead a group of scouts who planted
a garden for the enjoyment of the residents at De LaSalle Hall, a retirement home for
retired Christian Brothers on the Christian Brothers Academy campus in Lincroft.

William led the installation of a statuary, a bird bath, benches and many plants as part of this project. William is a parishioner of the Co-Cathedral of St. Robert Bellarmine, Freehold Township, where he was an altar server from 2009-18. He is a 2018 graduate of Christian Brothers Academy.

William was a member of the varsity track and field and cross country teams, and a member of the French Club. He is a member of the Providence College Class of 2022, majoring in marketing, according to the press release.

Jared’s Eagle Scout project consisted of demolishing a dilapidated cat shed and building a new one in its place for the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The MCSPCA runs a program to rescue and provide veterinary care for feral cats.

Whenever possible, the cats are returned to their colony or adopted as part of the MCSPCA backyard buddies program. When the feral cats are not adopted, they live on the grounds at the MCSPCA. The shed built by Jared provides housing and bedding for the feral cats.

Jared is a member of the Notre Dame High School varsity baseball team and a member of the National Honor Society. He will graduate in June, after which he plans to study civil engineering, according to the press release.

Anthony’s Eagle Scout project was to lead, oversee and assist in the construction of a platform stage at the YMCA of Western Monmouth County for use by the YMCA summer camp “Kiddie Kampers.”

The stage’s raised platform, staircase and handicap ramp afford the “Kiddie Kampers” program with a variety of uses and opportunities throughout the day, from an area for gatherings of “Kampers,” games and activities, presenting “Kamper” skits and theater performances, to a location to host award ceremonies at the end of each week.

Anthony is a member of the National Honor Society. He will graduate from the Freehold Regional High School District Science and Engineering learning center at Manalapan High School in June and plans to study physics or aerospace engineering in the fall, according to the press release.
