Credit card payments to Hopewell Township suspended for now

Hopewell Township residents who want to pay their property taxes and sewer bills online with a credit card are out of luck — at least for now.

That’s because Hopewell Township is in the process of upgrading its credit card processing program. The goal is to expand payment by credit card to other departments in the municipal government, township officials said.

The suspension of online payments means property owners will have to mail in a check to pay for property taxes and the sewer bill. They may pay in-person at the Tax Collector’s Office, or leave the checks in a payments drop box at the Hopewell Township Municipal Building.

Property owners cannot bring a credit card to the Tax Collector’s Office to make payment now, but it will be possible to do so when the new system is in place, Township Administrator Elaine Borges said.

Property taxes are due Feb. 1 and sewer fees are due March 1.

The plan was to have the new system in place before the Feb. 1 property tax payments were due, but there have been a couple of glitches with the accounting software provider, Borges said.
