FREEHOLD – After more than three decades of service, the director of the Freehold Public Library has retired.
During a meeting on Jan. 23, members of the Borough Council in Freehold Borough passed a resolution honoring Barbara Greenberg, the library’s director, on the occasion of her retirement. Greenberg was hired as director of the borough’s public library on March 28, 1988. She retired on Feb. 1.
According to the resolution, Greenberg studied zoology for two years at Drew University, Madison, before earning a bachelor’s degree in education from Kean University, Union, and an elementary teacher’s certification in 1976.
Greenberg worked as a teacher and in real estate before pursuing a career in library sciences. She earned a master’s degree in library sciences from Rutgers University in 1985.
Before coming to Freehold Borough, Greenberg worked as a librarian for the Alexander Library at Rutgers and was a cataloging and reference librarian for the Somerset County Library System.
“For nearly 31 years, Barbara has overseen employees and staff members to ensure daily operations are running smoothly,” officials said in the resolution. “The mayor and council congratulate Barbara Greenberg on her retirement and extend to her their deep appreciation for her nearly 31 years of dedicated service and offer their best wishes for many more years of health and happiness as she begins this new chapter in her life.”
In other business, council members confirmed the resignation of Dr. Gregory Jewell as a member of the Freehold Board of Health; the resignation of Cornelius Begley as a member of the Freehold Borough Planning Board; the appointment of Andrew Sanchez as a member of the Freehold Fire Department, Engine and Hose Company No. 1; and the resignation of Patrick Healey as a member of the Freehold Fire Department, Monmouth Hose Company.
