North Brunswick athlete shines on and off the field

Chandler Mattis has been selected as the Scholar/Athlete/Artist for January 2019 by the North Brunswick Department of Parks, Recreation & Community Services.

Chandler is a senior at North Brunswick Township High School (NBTHS) and has earned Honor Roll throughout high school, according to a proclamation read in his honor during the Jan. 14 Township Council meeting.

Chandler played forward for the junior varsity and varsity soccer teams at NBTHS. He has also been a member of the freshman and junior varsity basketball team. He ran track for the high school team and placed in the Top 20 of the High School Great American Track and Field Classic Race during his sophomore year.

During his junior year, he was a member of the YPAR Club (Youth Participation Action Research) which requires identifying a problem in the community and then researching and developing solutions to correct the problem, according to the proclamation.

Chandler participated with North Brunswick Township’s recreation and travel leagues in both basketball and soccer for more than 10 years. He continues to serve the community as a recreational soccer referee.

Chandler was a primary contributor to the township slideshow/internship opportunity honoring township veterans for Memorial Day, and participated in the Care to Walk/Run for the past several years.

He is a crew member at Frutta Bowls and attends Kendall Park Baptist Church regularly with his family, according to the proclamation.

Chandler has traveled to many countries including England, France, Quebec and Jamaica.

His future plan is to attend college in the fall to study to be a financial analyst/business major.
