NORTH BRUNSWICK – The latest recipient of the North Brunswick Department of Parks, Recreation & Community Services’ Scholar Athlete Award has already received a multitude of academic honors.
Shakthi P. Rave was recognized for February 2019. She is a senior at North Brunswick Township High School with a GPA of 4.41. She is an AP Scholar with Distinction and a National Merit Commended Student.
In December 2018, she received a proclamation from the North Brunswick Board of Education for placing third in the New Jersey STEAM Tank Challenge, created and sponsored by the New Jersey School Board Association and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to encourage students in areas of science, technology, engineering, the arts and math.
Shakthi has also received achievement from the College Board in the Advanced Placement Program and Project Lead the Way to show she is prepared for advanced coursework in the area of Engineering.
She placed third in the Oncology Olympiad Rutgers Mini Event and she graduated with Honors from the premedical Honors Program at Rutgers Medical School in 2017, according to information included in a proclamation read in her honor during the Feb. 4 North Brunswick Township Council meeting.
Shakthi is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society. She is the president of the Interact Community Club (Rotary Club) and captain of the Raider Academics Science Club. Since 2015, she has been a member of the American Red Cross Club and Mathletes Club.
Shakthi has mentored the North Brunswick Elementary Robotics Outreach Program since 2015 and is part of the Raider Robotix FIRST Robotics Competition World Champions.
She is involved with the North Brunswick Township Municipal Alliance Women’s and Men’s Mentorship Leadership Conferences focusing on the Governor’s Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse. She participated in the Health Care Camp at St. Peter’s and the Rutgers SMART Program at the medical school. She continues in the Waksman Student Scholars Program and in June 2018 was part of PHocus (Public Health: Outlooks, Communities, and Urban Studies) at Rutgers, according to the proclamation.
Shakthi volunteers many hours at Saint Peter’s University Hospital and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, and has hosted the Community Blood Drive at Our Lady of Peace since last year. Through the Interact Club, she helped raise $1,000 for the North Brunswick Police Department’s Adopt-A-Cop Program and had a charity block party to fundraise for the Nepal earthquake, according to the proclamation.
Shakthi studied the Tamil language (Level 5) at the Kumarasamy Tamil School and completed the American Sign Language Level 1 and 2 and will be continuing Level 3 at Middlesex County College.
She had a Summer Research Internship at Rutgers NJ Medical School in the summer of 2018 with future aspirations to study medicine after graduation, according to the proclamation.
