A Hopewell Township family has been left homeless after a fire destroyed their home on River Road on Feb. 14, according to the Hopewell Township Police Department.
The fire was reported to police shortly before 11 p.m. by the homeowner. When police arrived, they saw flames on the first floor of the house and tried to put out the fire with fire extinguishers.
The Union Fire Company, under the command of Fire Chief Kurt Pederson, arrived and put out the fire. The house suffered fire, smoke and water damage and was left uninhabitable.
The Union Fire Company volunteer firefighters were assisted by firefighters from the Hopewell Fire Department and the Pennington Fire Company. Fire departments from Lambertville, West Amwell Township, Princeton, Hamilton Township, Plainsboro Township, and Upper Makefield Township and New Hope in Bucks County, Pa., also responded. The Union First Aid Squad also responded.
The cause of the fire, which is not believed to be suspicious, is under investigation by the Hopewell Township Police Department, the Hopewell Valley Emergency Services and the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office.
