Freehold Borough school board cuts cost of roof replacement contract

FREEHOLD – The Freehold Borough K-8 School District Board of Education has approved a $12,320 reduction in a contract for a partial roof replacement at one of the district’s facilities.

On Feb. 4, board members approved the change order in the contract with MTB, LLC, for the partial replacement of the roof at the Freehold Intermediate School, Park Avenue.

According to district administrators, the change order is a deduction for an unused allowance. The original $281,800 contract with the company will be reduced to $269,480.

The contract was awarded to MTB in February 2018 as part of a construction project to renovate Freehold Borough’s two facilities – the Park Avenue Complex and the Freehold Learning Center elementary school, Dutch Lane Road. The $33 million project was completed in December.

In other business, board members approved a project to repair the sewer pump system at the Freehold Learning Center and approved the appropriation of up to $37,774 from the district’s maintenance reserve to finance the project.

According to district administrators, the sewer pump system failed on Jan. 23, causing the need for a sewer pump truck to be brought to the school to remove waste from the sewer pit.

The district’s business administrator determined the matter to be an emergency condition and an emergency stabilization contract of $37,774 was awarded to Affordable Pumping Services.

After the emergency contract was awarded, a high capacity pump was installed to stabilize the sewer pit and eliminate the need for the pump truck. A special order secondary pump and a new control system have been ordered, according to district administrators.

Finally, the board authorized the district’s 21st Century Program to enter into an agreement with the Community Food Bank of New Jersey for nutrition and education programming.

The Community Food Bank will provide nutrition educators and materials at no cost to the district to conduct meal preparation workshops for students in the program from March 6 to April 11. The classes will include food preparation and consumption.
