Princeton schools appoint new assistant superintendent

Princeton school district officials have named Michael Volpe to be the Princeton Public Schools’ new assistant superintendent for Human Resources.

The Princeton Public Schools Board of Education appointed Volpe to replace Lewis Goldstein, who retired from the post Jan. 31, at a special school board meeting on Feb. 12. Volpe was chose from among a field of nearly 60 candidates.

Volpe, who is the director of Human Resources in the Hillsborough Township Public Schools, will assume his new duties April 16. Judith Bronston, a former administrator in the Lawrence Township Public Schools, is filling the position on an interim basis.

Volpe will be paid $175,000 annually, prorated to $36,458 for the period of April 16 through June 30.

In his new post, Volpe will serve as an adviser to Superintendent of Schools Steve Cochrane and the school board. He will manage human resources, public affairs and community affairs for the school district.

“Mike brings a wealth of experience to his new role with us,” Cochrane said.

“Mike is someone who cares about great teaching and who cares about people,” Cochrane said.

Volpe has been a reading teacher, an English teacher, an English Department chairman, a high school vice principal and an elementary school principal, Cochrane said.

Cochrane noted that Volpe initiated a character education program in the Hillsborough Township public school district and also started the practice of instructional rounds that brought teachers and administrators together to talk about successful practices.

Goldstein, who retired from the post of assistant superintendent of Human Resources, is one of three administrators who announced their plans to leave the district during the 2018-19 school year.

Princeton High School Principal Gary Snyder is retiring at the end of June and School Board Secretary/Business Administrator Stephanie Kennedy is leaving the school district at the end of this month.
