Monmouth County Freeholder Gerry P. Scharfenberger was recently welcomed to the Habitat for Humanity of Monmouth County (HFHMC) Board of Trustees. Scharfenberger previously worked with the nonprofit housing organization during his tenure as a freeholder and while he served as the mayor of Middletown.
Scharfenberger will aid the HFHMC Board of Trustees with fundraising initiatives as well as finding prospective sites to construct, rehabilitate and preserve homes for those in need, according to a press release.
HFHMC currently services 83 percent of Monmouth County and includes the following municipalities: Aberdeen, Allentown, Atlantic Highlands, Colts Neck, Deal, Eatontown, Englishtown, Fair Haven, Farmingdale, Freehold Borough, Freehold Township, Hazlet, Highlands, Holmdel, Howell, Keansburg, Keyport, Little Silver, Long Branch, Manalapan, Marlboro, Matawan, Middletown, Millstone Township, Monmouth Beach, Ocean Township, Oceanport, Red Bank, Rumson, Sea Bright, Shrewsbury Township, Tinton Falls, Union Beach and West Long Branch.

Students at the Marlboro Memorial Middle School, 71 Nolan Road, Marlboro, will present the story of Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe and Gloria the Hippo in “Madagascar – A Musical Adventure Jr.”
Follow the four friends as their life is about to change when curiosity overcomes Marty and he plots their escape from the caged confines of the Central Park Zoo, aided by a group of wild and wacky penguins.
“Madagascar – A Musical Adventure Jr.” features original music and lyrics by George Noriega and Joel Someillan, and a book by Kevin Del Aguila.
All community members are invited to attend the show. Performances of “Madagascar – A Musical Adventure Jr.” will take place at 7 p.m. March 22 and at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. March 23. All seats are $10 in advance and at the door.
Following the March 23 matinee, there will be a meet and greet with the Madagascar characters.
“Madagascar – A Musical Adventure Jr.” is directed by teachers Randi Maskery and Robin Shatsky. Set design, art and scenery lead by Janina West and her stage crew club.
Runners and walkers of all ages are invited to participate in the Steps for Bricks 5K
Run/Walk at the Manalapan Recreation Center, Route 522, Manalapan, on March 30. The event is organized by the Freehold Township High School chapter of Students Helping Honduras. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and the race will start at 11 a.m. Awards will be presented to the male and female winners. Registration is available at sites.google.com/view/steps-for-bricks-5k or by emailing stepsforbricks5k@gmail.com. Children under 5 can participate for free with a paying parent or guardian. The event will benefit Students Helping Honduras, a national nonprofit that creates jobs by employing local Honduran residents and teaching trade skills to build a school in their community. Funds raised from the 5K will go toward construction materials and worker salaries.

Honduras for one week each summer to work with residents to build a
school.
Colts Neck High School and Mainland Regional High School (Atlantic County) have advanced to the New Jersey State Bar Foundation’s Mock Trial Competition state finals on April 11 in New Brunswick. Teams from those schools won their respective rounds in the state semifinals on March 5. The state champion will represent New Jersey in the National High School Mock Trial Championship in Athens, Ga., in May. Since January, more than 200 high school teams from throughout New Jersey have tried the fictitious case of Avery Mansion v. Captain Kidd’s Pier, which deals with a roller coaster accident, according to a press release. The Vincent J. Apruzzese Mock Trial Competition is sponsored by the New Jersey State Bar Foundation in cooperation with the New Jersey State Bar Association and New Jersey’s county bar associations. This season marks the competition’s 37th year of service to the educational community in New Jersey.
