Sayreville Hall of Fame ceremony is April 27

SAYREVILLE – Five alumni of Sayreville War Memorial High School (SWMHS) are scheduled to become the latest inductees into their school’s Hall of Fame.

Scheduled to be honored at the SWMHS 2019 Hall of Fame Annual Awards Banquet are Carlo Alban, Daniel Buchanan, Mark Mills, Carlos Vargas and John Worobey. The event will be held at the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Hall, 575 Jernee Mill Road, on April 27 at 6 p.m.

Tickets to the banquet are $50 for adults and $30 for children, with a choice of meals.

Alban is from the Class of 1996 and has had a career in the arts for over 25 years. As a teenager, he portrayed the character Carlo on “Sesame Street” and has appeared on several other television series, including as a member of the cast of “Prison Break”.

Buchanan is from the Class of 1993 and has served as a member of the Borough Council for non-consecutive 12 years. He first served from 2005-07 and rejoined the governing body in 2011. The second longest-serving incumbent council member and the longest current term on the council, Buchanan has also served as council president for four years, including this year. He is the third generation of his family to be a member of the governing body.

Mills is from the Class of 1993 and graduated with honors. He earned a master’s degree in arts management from American University, Washington D.C., in 2006 and is completed the Getty Leadership Institute, a network for museum leaders, in 2014. As a member of the Getty Leadership Institute, Mills is the vice president of external affairs at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia.

Vargas is from the Class of 2008 and earned a doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) in astronomy from New Mexico State University in 2018 at the age of 28 in 2018. He also holds a master’s degree in astronomy from New Mexico State University and a bachelor’s degree in astrophysics from Rutgers University. Vargas has served as a mentor to undergraduate and Ph.D. students and formed a math-readiness program for underrepresented minority students in astrophysics.

Worobey is from the Class of 1969 and holds a Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University. A research authority on infant feeding, behavior and development, he is currently the director of the undergraduate program in nutritional sciences at Rutgers University.
