One man dead, one critically injured during fatal shooting outside Akbar restaurant in Edison

EDISON – Police are continuing to investigate a shooting that left one man dead and one man critically injured outside Akbar Restaurant, according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Police Chief Thomas Bryan.

Police responded to the shooting at approximately 1:56 a.m. on March 23. A 31-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene and another 40-year-old man, who was also shot, was taken to the hospital and remains in serious condition, according to police. Both men are from Newark.

The shooting took place outside the Akbar Restaurant on Cortland Street where a Reggae event was being held.

Edison Mayor Thomas Lankey said the shootings are tragic and upsetting to him and the entire community.

“I am confident that Edison’s well-trained police department, working in conjunction with the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, can and will bring to justice the person or persons responsible,” he said.

The shooting is being investigated by Detective Loren Long of the Edison Police Department and Detective Michael Connelly of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office. The investigation is active and is continuing.
