Brandeis University Middlesex Chapter will present “Purity Campaigns vs. Prostitution” at 1 p.m. April 8 at the East Brunswick Library, Civic Center Drive off Ryders Lane, East Brunswick.
In many American cities at the turn of the 20th century, purity crusades grew in force to bring an end to prostitution. Professor Leslie Fishbein will examine a broader picture of the times and explore the attempts leading to the regulation of this particular vice. She will compare this to contemporary views on sex and the exploitation of women.
Fishbein, PhD., is associate professor of American Studies at Rutgers University and teaches courses in American Studies, Jewish Studies, and Women’s and Gender Studies.
The event is free and open to the public.
The April social justice collection will collect toiletries for women and toys for children for Women Aware.
For more information about Brandeis membership, call Thelma at 732-257-4833.
