Under the golden dome in Trenton, an unremarkable piece of paper sits on a desk in the Legislature. The inconspicuous proposition calls for a statewide civic question. As early as this November, the state Legislature in concurrent Senate and Assembly resolutions calls for a green vote. The anticipated New Jersey question will be simple.
“Yes” is a vote for protecting the water we drink and the air we breathe. This is a groundbreaking cornerstone. The public’s right to clean air, water and natural resources will be guaranteed by a state constitutional amendment.
The New Jersey Constitution will read: “Every person has a right to a clean and healthy environment, including pure water, clean air and ecologically healthy habitats, and to the preservation of the natural, scenic, historic and esthetic qualities of the environment. The state shall not infringe upon these rights, by action or inaction.”
