The event is being held in connection with International Women’s Day, which was held March 8. Held worldwide since 1911, it recognizes the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

In Lawrence Township, the Woman of Excellence Award focuses on the accomplishments  of women who might not otherwise be recognized for their contributions to the community, said GEPNA vice president John Gaskins.

Silver’s focus is on sustainability. She began using cloth napkins instead of disposable paper napkins, and old towels and bits of flannel cloth to use as cleaning cloths instead of paper towels.

Silver is the fifth recipient of the “Woman of Excellence Award” given by GEPNA.

Previous winners have included Lawrence Township Health Officer Carol Chamberlain and former Superintendent of Schools Crystal Edwards.

Also, Ann Demarais, who has been active in the Lawrence Greenway network of trails, and Carol Nicholas of the Greater Mercer Public Health Partnership and who is also a Girl Scouts of America leader have been honored.
