SPOTSWOOD–Complete with Girl Scout cookies, milk and an interactive quiz, the Spotswood Police Department served as the co-host to the first Cookies and Cops event.

Providing Thin Mints and Shortbreads, Spotswood Girl Scout Troop 83806 and Monroe Girl Scout Troop 80865 supplied their famous cookies while being the co-host in the event with the police department.

More than 45 residents attended the March 27 event in the Spotswood Municipal Building.

Chief of Police Michael Zarro said each year the police department taps into its creative juices in an effort to develop new and innovative community outreach programs.

“Since the Spotswood Police Department has always supported the local Girl and Boy Scouts, we felt it prudent to assist the Girl Scouts in their annual cookie fundraising effort, while simultaneously using this as a forum to foster communications with our residents in a relaxed environment,” he said. “This first-time-ever event included Girl Scout cookies, milk, water, coffee and an interactive quiz game with the police.”

Zarro said during the event, Sgt. Nicholas Mayo and Sgt. Edward Schapley ran the quiz that sparked the audience’s participation.

“The Spotswood Police Department prides itself on the numerous, groundbreaking and innovative approaches it takes in its community outreach programs. We continue to create programs and events that build on a sound foundation of community trust and open lines of communication,” Zarro said.
