The Hillsborough High School TED-Ed Club will present “HHS Boro Talks 2019,”  which will be the fifth annual Boro Talks Event on April 5.

The event is scheduled for at 6 p.m. in the Hillsborough High School Library.

The evening will consist of 12 to 15 student speeches with a short intermission. Refreshments will be served. Tickets are $2 at the door with all proceeds going to the TED-Ed Club for future activities and events.

Students are planned to speak on a variety of topics derived from events in their lives that have provided them with wisdom that has universal application. The student speeches will be recorded and uploaded to a dedicated YouTube Channel for TED-Ed clubs around the world. Once uploaded, the evening’s speeches will be reviewed by members of the TED team to be considered for presentation to a larger audience via future TED conferences.

The Hillsborough High School TED-Ed Club, advised by Hillsborough High School English teacher, Melissa Blevins, began five years ago as the Loudspeakers Club for students looking to improve their public speaking and leadership skills.

The club holds yearly presentations led by students, as well as a book fair in conjunction with Barnes & Noble.

In the past, the club has conducted workshops for younger students at both the Hillsborough Public Library and Hillsborough Middle School.

In 2018, the club was officially recognized as a TED-Ed club, TED’s youth and education initiative which was designed to spark and celebrate the ideas of teachers and students.

“The students are so fortunate to have this opportunity to engage in the spread of universal ideas that matter not only to each of them, but also to the audience,” Blevins said.
