Environmental panel debuts Tip of the Month

MANALAPAN – The Manalapan Environmental Commission has started a new effort to promote environmental awareness and action through a series of monthly environmental tips.

Residents can be on the lookout for these tips at the bottom of Manalapan email blasts and on the township’s Facebook page, according to a press release.

The tips will appear inside a graphic designed by Manalapan resident Courtney Rybak, who is a student at Rowan University. The tips are written by the commission’s information officer, Justin Diament, who is a student at High Technology High School.

Commission Chairwoman Jenine Tankoos said, “I love when youth are able to get involved with Manalapan Environmental Commission projects. It’s a great way for them to learn about the importance of environmental protection and civic involvement.”

Commission members said they hope the monthly tips will encourage residents to make small changes in their daily activities that will improve their impact on the environment.

The tips will cover a broad range of environmental topics, as well as tips that are unique to Manalapan residents, such as local recycling information.

Commission members said they hope that by presenting the same tip several times each month and in various locations, a significant number of residents will see and remember the tips, and implement them, according to the press release.

The first tip, which was released in March, encouraged residents to check or change their furnace filter to help save energy

The April tip explains that waiting to run a dishwasher until it is full can save energy and water.

Tankoos said several commissioners heard from friends and neighbors who told them the tips are very much appreciated and some who said the March tip had prompted them to change their furnace filter.

“I think this project can make a big impact on the environmental consciousness of Manalapan as a whole,” Mayor Susan Cohen said. “With Earth Day approaching, there’s no better time for residents to start improving their environmental impact.”
