There will be no political primary contests for nominations for three Hightstown Borough Council seats because none of the Democratic Party or Republican Party candidates is facing opposition in the June 4 political primary.
The winners of the June 4 political primaries will square off in the Nov. 5 general election. Up for grabs are a pair of seats on Borough Council that carry three-year terms that would end in December 2022, and an unexpired term that ends in December 2020.
Incumbent Borough Council Joshua Jackson and Steven Misiura, both Democrats, filed their nominating petitions by the April 1 deadline. They are seeking re-election to Borough Council for three-year terms.
Misiura said he is seeking another term because there is a lot of unfinished business, such as the new Borough Hall that is in the works to replace the building that was flooded by Hurricane Irene in 2011, and the redevelopment of the former rug mill property.
Jackson said he wants to serve because he “really loves” Hightstown Borough and he would like to see the town “continue to move in the right direction.”
There are many projects under way, he said, and he wants to be part of it.
On the Republican Party side, incumbent Borough Council member Patricia Egan has filed to run for her party’s nomination for a three-year seat. She was appointed to fill a vacancy created by the resignation of Borough Council member Connor Montferrat, but only through November.
Egan said she is running for a full, three-year term because she loves Hightstown Borough and its sense of community.
“There are so many amazing opportunities for growth and improvement,and I want to be part of helping those ideas come to fruition. I look forward to bringing some fresh ideas to the table, including new business development to help stabilize our property taxes,” she said.
For the remainder of Montferrat’s unexpired term, which would end in December 2020, one Democrat – Joseph Cicalese – and one Republican – James Eufemia – have filed to run in the June primary.
Cicalese said he likes the family environment in Hightstown Borough and would “like to do my best” to maintain that atmosphere.
Eufemia said there are many exciting things happening in Hightstown Borough – such as the new Borough Hall and the rug mill redevelopment project – and he wants to be a part of it.
