FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP – The Township Committee has appropriated $55,000 for a sidewalk project that is intended to improve access to Opatut Park, which is located on East Freehold Road.

On March 26, committee members adopted an ordinance appropriating $55,000 for the project to install a sidewalk at the park. The money will come from the capital improvement fund in Freehold Township’s general capital fund, according to the ordinance.

According to municipal officials, the sidewalk is part of project to improve access to Opatut Park.

The implementation of the project will follow the completion of a walk audit from the mayor’s wellness program that evaluated the need to improve access to the park. Freehold Township has received a grant to assist officials in making improvements.

Officials are planning to install an asphalt bike/walking path between Robertsville and East Freehold roads. A crosswalk will be installed to improve pedestrian access to Opatut Park and to the YMCA of Western Monmouth County, East Freehold Road, from surrounding neighborhoods.

In other business, committee members appointed Jeremy Jeffries as a Class II special law enforcement officer through 2019.

According to a resolution, Jeffries’ duties will be limited and confined to Freehold Township schools; the issuance of summonses in fire zones, handicap parking areas and zones where parking is prohibited; serving as a courtroom officer in municipal court; providing traffic control in special details; working as a communications operator; and special duties assigned by the police chief.
