Operation Medicine Cabinet set for April 27 in East Windsor

East Windsor Township residents who want to get rid of expired and unwanted prescription medicine can do so during the annual “Operation Medicine Cabinet,” set for April 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the lobby at the Police/Municipal Court building at 80 One Mile Road.

As it has done for several years, East Windsor Township is taking part in “Operation Medicine Cabinet,” which is being sponsored by the New Jersey Division of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Mayor Janice S. Mironov said.

“East Windsor Township is partnering again with the local U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in this special event to promote and focus on the importance of disposing of expired and unneeded medications in a safe and responsible, non-hazardous manner,” Mayor Mironov said.

“Operation Medicine Cabinet provides an opportunity to securely dispose of unused, unwanted and expired medications in an environmentally responsible manner while preventing the possible misuse and access to those drugs by unauthorized persons and young people,” she said.

Last year, residents dropped off nearly 78 pounds of unwanted medicine during “Operation Medicine Cabinet” in four hours’ time. This was more than double the amount that was turned in during the event in 2017, when 35 pounds of unwanted drugs were turned in.

The drugs that are collected during “Operation Medicine Cabinet” are turned over to the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration for disposal. They are destroyed on the next business day.

While “Operation Medicine Cabinet” is helpful and has been successful, it is not the only chance to residents to clear their homes of unwanted drugs, Mayor Mironov said.

East Windsor Township residents can drop off unneeded, unused or unwanted drugs in a special drop box which has been permanently installed in the lobby of the Police/Municipal Court building. The lobby is open every day, around the clock.

The goal of installing the drop box is to make it convenient for residents, so they will not have to rely on once-a-year events such as “Operation Medicine Cabinet” to dispose of drugs, Mayor Mironov said, urging residents to make use of the drop box.
