Residents should speak out about asphalt plant

Typing Letter to the Editor for the Opinion page.

Over the last few months, the Howell Zoning Board of Adjustment has heard testimony for a use variance for the construction of an asphalt manufacturing plant by L&L Asphalt Company.

Howell’s mayor and Township Council adopted an ordinance banning asphalt manufacturing in July 2017. They were clear in adopting their ordinance that such plants were not in the public interest. There are numerous homes that did not exist in the vicinity 10 years ago.

This particular application would result in increased truck traffic with late evening through morning frequency due to roadwork, toxic chemicals and six unsightly 90-foot-tall silos.

This asphalt project is clearly detrimental to the public interest and must be rejected by the zoning board.

I strongly urge residents of Howell to attend the zoning board meeting on April 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the Howell municipal building on Route 9. Public comments will be sought and followed by the board’s decision on this application.
