Residents in Pennington Borough this weekend will have an opportunity to participate in the first community-wide yard sale.

On May 4, from 9  a.m. to 4 p.m., homeowners can take advantage of increased customer traffic to resell clothes, toys, equipment, furniture and other household items, according to Pennington Borough officials.

“Like they do in Hopewell Borough, people are invited to have a yard sale at their own residence on this day. I am hopeful that we will get a lot of people participating in yard sales around town. Homeowners keep all the proceeds,” Pennington Borough Administrator Eileen Heinzel said.

According to officials, the community-wide yard will help reduce the amount of unwanted items sent to the landfill for disposal.

“This is a community event that we hope gets people to walk around town. This community-wide yard sale also gives people a chance to sell things they do not want anymore and reuse things that have value,” she said. “This event also helps residents clean out their houses, because at the end of the yard sale if anything is not sold or taken as a donation, the borough will pick it up.”

Pennington Borough Mayor Joseph Lawver said the town is in the process of arranging several non-profits to do pick up of leftover items after the sale is over.

The Borough has notified those local non-profit organizations to anticipate donations left out at the curbs on Saturday afternoon, according to Borough officials.

“This sale allows people to get rid of things they do not want. Two this event provides a great way for people to get what they need at a low price. Three this keeps recurring materials out of the landfill,” Lawver said. “Involving non-profits is another important aspect of the sale. Bringing in the non-profits allows for items leftover to be recycled.”

He said all regular borough trash rules will apply still with items leftover on the curb.

Pennington Borough officials reported that the Borough Public Works Department will collect bulk trash items on the morning of May 6, provided they have the proper number of bulk wastes stickers.

Stickers are available for purchase at Borough Hall.

Residents can check their 2019 Household Trash and Recycling Calendar for guidelines about Pennington’s Bulk Trash Program, Borough officials said.

“This event will take a couple of years to build up overtime. This is definitely a multi-year commitment for the Borough,” Lawver said.

There is no fee or advance registration required. The event will be held rain or shine.
