TINTON FALLS – A representative of the Monmouth County Board of Freeholders will hold a meeting in Tinton Falls on May 13 to address what residents say is a persistent odor coming from the Monmouth County Reclamation Center in the borough.
The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Tinton Falls municipal building, which is located at 556 Tinton Ave. Residents will have the opportunity to ask questions regarding the landfill and its odor remediation.
The stench, which officials and residents have agreed is unacceptable, is disruptive to the quality of life of residents who live near the reclamation center that accepts garbage from all 53 municipalities in the county. The landfill is at 6000 Asbury Ave.
County officials have said the odor is caused by landfill gas, by leachate – water that comes into contact with garbage – and by a four-month construction project at the reclamation center that concluded in January.
County officials have been working to eliminating the source of the odors since January.
According to an April 26 landfill update from Freeholder Director Thomas Arnone, Tinton Falls Mayor Vito Perillo and Borough Council members, representatives of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and representatives of the Monmouth County Regional Health Commission have been invited to attend the May 13 meeting.
“At this meeting, I look forward to providing an in-person update on the progress that has been made, as well as the current work being done at the landfill,” Arnone said in the update. “I will be addressing specific questions and concerns that have been raised and discussing the next steps the county will be taking over the coming weeks.
” … We are still vigorously working on shrinking the active face of the landfill and migrating it away from residential areas. A special operations crew is also distributing cover materials daily and covering and treating leachate seeps every day,” Arnone said.
