North Brunswick veteran street namings begin 2019 season at Mumber Way

NORTH BRUNSWICK – The Township of North Brunswick began its street sign recognition for 2019 with the addition of a secondary street sign for Mumber Way at Cranbury Cross Road and Village Drive West.

Frank Andrew Mumber was born on Jan. 22, 1925, in Bedminster Township, Pennsylvania. He moved to New Brunswick as a young child and attended New Brunswick elementary schools. He graduated from New Brunswick High School in 1942, according to the proclamation read in his honor on April 29.

Mumber enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Aug. 21, 1942. He served as a Fire Control Man Third Class on the USS Lexington in the Pacific during World War II. During his years of service, he was awarded the American Theater Medal, the Victory Medal, the Philippine Liberation Medal, and the 1st Asiatic-Pacific Medal-4 Stars, according to the proclamation.

Frank was honorably discharged on March 20, 1946.

Mumber attended Rutgers University in New Brunswick where he received a Bachelor of Science and a Master’s Degree in Education. He taught at Ramsey High School before returning to his Alma Mater, New Brunswick High School, where he taught history and German. He became the chairman of the Foreign Language Department while at New Brunswick High School and was instrumental in establishing language clubs, officiated at track meets and other school activities, according to the proclamation.

Mumber married Margaret Mumber Shallcross in 1954 and moved to North Brunswick where he resided until his death on June 15, 1981. Margaret is still a resident of North Brunswick.
