SOUTH RIVER–The Borough Council approved a resolution authorizing a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a permanent 24/7 emergency medical service provider.
On March 25, the council approved a resolution allowing Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJ) to provide emergency medical services for residents. Previously all of the borough’s emergency medical calls were handled by the South River Rescue Squad Inc. (SRRS) and the South River Emergency Medical Services Inc. (SREMS); however, the borough is currently in an ongoing lawsuit with the SRRS and SREMS.
On May 24, 2018, the borough filed a lawsuit against SRRS and SREMS alleging that both organizations’ members were negligent while on duty. Both the SRRS and the SREMS have denied the borough’s claims in the lawsuit.
Business Administrator Londensky said after the resolution was passed on April 22 that currently, RWJ is temporarily handling all emergency calls that come from the borough until a permanent emergency medical services provider is chosen. The borough has not put out the bid yet to find a permanent emergency medical services provider.
