EDISON – An Edison police officer assigned as a high school resource officer at John P. Stevens High School suffered leg and hip injuries after he got pinned between a “distraught student’s” moving vehicle, according to police.
The incident occurred at 8:10 a.m. on May 30. The driver – who police described as a distraught 18-year-old female student – fled the scene in a gray Volvo S-60, heading north on Grove Avenue. Police took her into custody a short time later near the Stop and Shop on Inman Avenue, police said.
The student is undergoing psychiatric evaluation at the Rutgers University’s Behavioral Health Care facility in Piscataway. Police have charged the student with aggravated assault, obstruction and eluding arrest, police said.
“My first concern is for Officer [Andrew] Roy’s health and recovery,” Police Chief Thomas Bryan said. “Our officer sustained serious injuries while trying to calm a troubled young woman and prevent her from leaving school property. Officer Roy demonstrated empathy and dedication to duty.”
Roy, 42, a 16-year veteran of the department, was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick for evaluation and treatment, police said.
