Improvements slated for Freehold Township parks during 2019

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP – The Township Committee has awarded a contract for 2019 park improvements in Freehold Township.

During a recent meeting, committee members awarded a $284,029 contract to Thor Construction Group LLC. The improvements will be made at Michael J. Tighe Park, Georgia Road; Sandy Brook Park, Parkside Avenue; and Whittier Oaks Park, East Freehold Road.

The contract was awarded to Thor Construction Group on the recommendation of Township Engineer Timothy White after the contractor submitted the lowest bid for the project.

Other bids were received from Halecon Inc., which bid $598,351; V&K Construction Inc., which bid $426,695; and Shore Top Construction Corp., which bid $416,113, according to a resolution.

Township Administrator Peter Valesi said the primary improvements at Michael J. Tighe Park will consist of base repairs and asphalt overlay of several bike paths; underground drainage improvements; the removal and replacement of fencing and fence post footings around a dodgeball court; and the installation of permanent and removable bollards.

The primary improvements at Sandy Brook Park will consist of the installation of 4-inch thick concrete walkways, he said.

The primary improvements at Whittier Oaks Park will consist of the removal and replacement of four tennis court net posts and footings, according to Valesi.

At Michael J. Tighe Park and Sandy Brook Park, other work will include the removal of asphalt and its replacement with topsoil and sod (outside Field No. 3 at Michael J. Tighe Park and outside of the tennis courts at Sandy Brook Park), and the removal and replacement of damaged concrete sidewalk (at Georgia Road by Michael J. Tighe Park and at Parkside Avenue, Wellington Road and Glenbrook Road by Sandy Brook Park).

Valesi said that at Sandy Brook Park and Whittier Oak Park, work will include the removal and replacement of four fixed in-ground basketball hoop systems and footings.

Crack repairs and resurfacing of sports courts will take place at all three parks. The improvements will be performed at the dodgeball court at Michael J. Tighe Park, at the tennis and basketball courts at Sandy Brook Park, and at the tennis and basketball courts at Whittier Oak Park.

In other business, committee members awarded a $35,215 contract to Georgia Golf Construction Inc. for turf improvements for Field No. 3 at Michael J. Tighe Park.

And, committee members awarded a contract to Whirl Construction Inc. for the installation of playground equipment at Michael J. Tighe Park. The contract is not to exceed $30,000, according to a resolution.
