HOWELL – Representatives of the Howell K-8 School District and the township are discussing the possibility of the school district moving its administrative offices to the Howell municipal building on Route 9.

The school district’s administrative offices are at 200 Squankum-Yellowbrook Road in a building that is owned by the township.

Township Manager Brian Geoghegan mentioned the discussions to the members of the Township Council at the May 21 meeting of the governing body.

“We have been working with the Board of Education about relocating their office space to town hall,” Geoghegan said.

Board of Education President Mark Bonjavanni mentioned the discussions during the school board’s May 22 meeting.

“Just for the record, we have been having conversations with the township’s governing body with regard to moving our administrative offices to the municipal building. No final decisions have been made yet, at this time it is strictly conversation,” he said.

The building on Squankum-Yellowbrook Road that serves as the school district’s headquarters was constructed years ago as an office building for a municipal utilities authority, with a water plant at the rear of the property. The water plant was eventually sold to New Jersey American Water and the township retained ownership of the office building.

The school district has a lease for the building that can be renewed every five years. The next renewal date is 2021. The full rent-free lease for the building runs through 2041.
