With a $10,000 Model Classroom Grant from OceanFirst Foundation, Aldrich Memorial School, Howell, had the opportunity to transform its media center into a makerspace.
This new learning space will foster a “Maker Mindset” and provide students with the opportunity to construct solutions on their own, according to a press release.
The model classroom will have a well-organized layout, colorful tables, flexible seating options and multiple stations set up for students. Each station will have its own technology component along with typed directions and video instructions.
The four key work areas are Coding, Robotics and Computer Science; Video and Multimedia Production; 3D Design and STEAM; and a Making and “makeHERspace.”
The “makeHERspace” will be curated to ignite the interest of female students in technology, engineering and design.
All restaurants throughout Monmouth County are invited to participate in the first Grown in Monmouth Restaurant Week, which will run from July 28 through Aug. 4.
“We decided to create a restaurant week that will promote our local businesses and our local farmers at no cost to them,” Freeholder Director Thomas A. Arnone said. “The only ‘rule’ is that these restaurants must feature a dish made with ingredients that are grown in Monmouth County. The rest is up to them and we can’t wait to see what creative dishes these chefs come up with.”
Restaurants participating in the Grown in Monmouth Restaurant Week must feature at least one dish that is made with ingredients that have been grown in Monmouth County. There are no requirements for pricing or menu selection, according to a press release from the county.
The county’s Division of Economic Development is available to assist restaurants with connecting with local farms.

Look for turtles, egrets, herons, ospreys and other wildlife in their natural habitat during a boat tour of the Monmouth County Park System’s Manasquan Reservoir. Led by a park system naturalist, these 45-minute tours leave from the Visitor Center, Windeler Road, Howell.
Tours are offered at the top of the hour from 2-5 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, May 4 through Sept. 2. Wednesday afternoon tours are offered at 2, 3 and 4 p.m. from July 3 through Aug. 28. Evening tours are offered on the first Friday of each month June through August; call 732-751-9453 as times vary for the evening tours.
All tours are dependent on the weather and the reservoir’s water level. The fee is $6 per adult and $4 per child age 12 and under. Life jackets are required and provided.
