Hayward Hutchinson Chappell, 91

Hayward Hutchinson Chappell at the age of 91 passed at his home in the Princeton Windrows at noon, on Sunday June 2nd in the company of his much loved caregiver and friend, Fred Nyarko.

He is survived by his two sons from his first marriage to Patricia Purcell, Hayward Jr. and Webb, their wives, Nancy and Linda, their children: Justin, Cory, Ava and Julian and six stepchildren from his second marriage to Cis Kloman: Lissa, Tad, Stephen, Kip, Tucker and Hilleary. In addition, a handful of grandchildren on both sides. Born August 31, 1927 in Jamestown, Rhode Island to Sidney Webb and Walter Franklin Chappell, he lived a good part of his childhood in Washington, DC, summering in East Hampton. He graduated from the Hill School then Princeton with a major in history. He served in the Navy during the Korean War, did an only recently revealed stint in the CIA to the amazement of his family, then worked his adult life as a catalyst salesman for American Cynamid and United Oil Products. He loved body surfing, cars, carpentry, the New York Times and engaging with all manner of people and life. He will be remembered as a good soul with great spirit and a wonderfully unique sense of humor. He would not pass you by without a smile and acknowledgement or playful quip.
