Middlesex County Vo-Tech Schools take first, eighth place for statewide SAT scores

The Middlesex County Academy for Science, Mathematics and Engineering Technologies in Edison and the Middlesex County Academy for Allied Health and Biomedical Sciences in Woodbridge have been ranked first and eighth among New Jersey’s public high schools in average SAT scores.

In data released by the state Department of Education, Edison Academy had a combined average SAT score of 1,498 out of a possible 1,600 – 731 in reading and 767 in math. Woodbridge Academy had a combined average score of 1,378 – 682 in reading and 696 in math. The state average was 1,085, while the national average was 1,068, according to information provided by Middlesex County Vocational and Technical Schools (MCVTS).

“We are proud of the achievements of all our students and take pride in preparing them to be ready for college and career,” Superintendent of Schools Dianne D. Veilleux said in a prepared statement.

Earlier this year, both MCVTS academies were in the Top 10 among New Jersey public high schools and the Top 100 nationwide in U.S. News & World Report’s annual Best High Schools rankings, according to the statement. The East Brunswick School received another honor and was again designated a National Green Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. The school first received this honor in 2015.

“Thanks to our academy students for their hard work and great SAT scores. You’ve truly earned this honor. I’d also like to also thank the academy’s faculty administrators, and staff for their commitment to the highest standards of education here in Middlesex County,” Middlesex County Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios said in the statement.

“This is an achievement our students can be proud of, and one that will help them on the road to future success. Congratulations to all our academy students, faculty and staff,” said Freeholder Kenneth Armwood, chair of the Business Development and Education Committee.

The two academies, part of the Middlesex County Vocational and Technical School District, were the top two high schools in Middlesex County in the U.S. News rankings. Edison Academy was No. 3 in New Jersey and No. 61 in the United States, while Woodbridge Academy was No. 6 in the state and No. 75 in the nation among more than 23,000 public schools surveyed, according to the statement.

The Edison and Woodbridge academies, along with the MCVTS Perth Amboy campus, have been designated National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education.

Admission to both the Edison Academy, with 160 students, and the Woodbridge Academy, with 272 students, is competitive.
