The program is geared toward children with special needs and their families. It was launched in 2018 and is presented two Fridays per month.

The award honors up to four outstanding public libraries that currently provide exemplary literacy programs for children from birth to six years, their families and caregivers, according to information provided by the Old Bridge Library. The award provides a $1,000 honorarium, a certificate and promotion of the winning library as a model program for other libraries.

The winning libraries were honored during the State Librarian’s Breakfast at the 2019 NJLA Conference in Atlantic City on May 31.

“We are thrilled to receive this award which recognizes the library’s commitment to providing outstanding programming for children with special needs, enabling them to acquire literacy skills, participate in social play and develop their fine motor skills,” Youth Services Librarian Pham Condello said in the statement. “It has been enormously rewarding to see how well-received and valuable this program is to our patrons.”
