Driver dies hours after colliding with NJ Transit bus along South River route

SOUTH RIVER – The driver of a vehicle who collided with an NJ Transit bus suffered fatal injuries hours after the initial crash.

The South River Police Department (SRPD) responded to a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Old Bridge Turnpike and Leonardine Avenue around 3:18 p.m. on June 11.

At least four injuries were confirmed when officers arrived, according to information provided by the SRPD.

A preliminary investigation revealed the bus was traveling north on Old Bridge Turnpike and a gray SUV was traveling south on Old Bridge Turnpike. The driver of the SUV reportedly attempted to make a left turn onto Leonardine Avenue in front of the bus, causing a head-on collision. As a result of the collision between the two vehicles, the bus subsequently struck the residence of 58 Old Bridge Turnpike.

The driver of the SUV, a 75-year-old resident of South River, received medical attention from officers on the scene as well as from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital EMTs and paramedics, according to the statement. He was subsequently transported to Robert Wood Johnson in New Brunswick with life-threatening injuries and was pronounced deceased at 3:37 a.m. on June 12. All other injuries were to the occupants of the bus and were deemed to be non-life threatening at the time of the accident.
