Chasing fireflies has been a tradition at Terhune Orchards.
For years, Terhune Orchards has organized this more than 10-year tradition into a Firefly Festival, that kicks off the summer for Princeton residents.
“This is our only afternoon and evening festival we have, so that is how it is different for us. This festival attracts a lot of local folks. We always get a great response from the community,” said Reuwai Hanewald, eldest daughter of owners Pam and Gary Mount. “We have an area of crafts for children that is additional, where they can dress up as fireflies. They make their own antennas and wings. They get their own glow stick tail.”
Hanewald explained that, from 4-9 p.m. on June 23, residents and guests can attend the festival for free to watch the fireflies come alive.
For children they can participate in the craft activities for $5, which will have the kids decorating wings and making antennas.
Miss Amy and the Big Kids Band will be providing the music for the event as they preform for those in attendance, according to Hanewald.
“Our idea is that everyone has a great memory of evenings in the summer chasing fireflies, which I think brings a community feel. We are a community place,” she said. “We are just giving people a spot to have that kind of enjoyment in the community.”
A farm supper at Pam’s Food Tent at the farm will be open for those who attend.
According to Hanewald, the grill will be cooking hot dogs and barbecued chicken, with salads and gazpacho.
“There is no need to plan dinner,” she said.
Deserts will be available as well Pies, donuts and other freshly baked treats, officials said.
“People can walk around the farm and enjoy a summer evening,” Hanewald said
During the festival the winery tasting room at Terhune Orchards, which is located on 330 Cold Soil Road in Princeton, will stay open late for wine tastings.
