JACKSON – Work will begin this summer on a new bridge on Grawton Road in Jackson. The Ocean County Board of Freeholders is expected to award a $1.6 million contract to Marbo Inc. for the new span.
According to a press release from the county, the new bridge will have a precast concrete culvert and concrete wing walls. The structure will be built on steel-pipe piles with concrete footings.
“This work is part of our continuing effort of improving our county road system, which is
the largest in the state,” Freeholder Director Virginia E. Haines said.
Haines and Freeholder Deputy Director John P. Kelly are co-liaisons to the Ocean
County Engineering Department.
The new span will replace an aging wood structure that was built in 1936 and carries traffic over the Dove Mill Branch of the Toms River, according to the press release.
“We are constantly monitoring our roads and bridges to ensure we have the safest
possible road network here in Ocean County,” Kelly said.
The new bridge will be 36 feet wide with two 12-foot-wide travel lanes and two 6-foot-wide
shoulders. The current bridge is 30 feet wide.
A full detour around the bridge will be in place for the duration of the construction, which
is expected to last about six months, according to the press release.
The project also includes the installation of New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection mandated terrestrial animal crossings on each side of the main culvert.
