East Brunswick, DOT to share cost of water main improvements along Route 18

EAST BRUNSWICK–The Township Council adopted a $3 million bond ordinance to provide half of the funding for various water main improvements along Route 18.

The improvements were authorized on June 10 for the purposes of entering into an agreement with the New Jersey Department of Transportation (DOT) to construct a new water main on Route 18 from Rues Lane to the bridge over the New Jersey Turnpike incidental to the road construction by the DOT along Route 18.

Business Administrator Joseph Criscuolo reported on the issue.

“Basically, we are going to be partnering with the state to replace the water line that is running down Route 18. That water line is aging and with the state in their design of the drainage and the highway, it’s apparent that there is a lot of conflict with our water line, which would have cost them additional design and construction.”

Criscuolo explained that Planning and Engineering Director Keith Kipp and Public Works Department Director Daniel Losik were able to work with the state, and the state is going to pay for half of the water line.

“[The township] is on the hook for the other half and we get to pick who we want to design it and so on. So we are excited about the fact that we will be able to upgrade that water service. It is also important that as we get into the new redevelopment areas that we have a really robust water system to be able to provide a service that cited an area that the town is going to be having. So this is a great project for the town and once again a good partnership with the State of New Jersey as they work on that project.”

Costs will include the acquisition and installation of applicable water main improvements; construction planning; preparation of plans and specifications; administration; and all work, materials, equipment, labor in accordance with the plans and specifications, according to the council agenda.

Criscuolo said the township’s expected share is $3 million.
