Fleeing burglary suspect dies in fatal crash in Old Bridge

A man who was suspected of fleeing from a residential burglary and an attempted burglary in Old Bridge died in a fatal crash.

Dwayne Melvin, 47, of the Cliffwood Beach section of Aberdeen, was airlifted to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick where he was pronounced dead from the injuries he sustained from the crash on July 2, according to information provided by Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Chief William Volkert of the Old Bridge Police Department.

The investigation determined that Melvin was driving a Mercedes C Class Sedan, allegedly traveling west on Route 516 in an excessive speed, according to reports. He then crossed over the double yellow lines and crashed head on into an oncoming Ford F350 pickup truck. The driver of the truck and its two passengers were transported to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.

The crash was investigated by Police Officer Henry Penley of the Old Bridge Police Department and Detective Jonathan Berman of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

The investigation began after police were dispatched to the scene of the crash on Route 516, near Sherwood Lane in Old Bridge, at 9:02 a.m., according to reports.
