MATAWAN – To offer a nearby facility for residents to convert their reusable materials, Matawan Borough opened its first recycling center on June 26.
“We decided to build the recycling center to show our commitment to this important issue. This will increase awareness and participation, and make it convenient for our residents to recycle,” Mayor Joseph Altomonte said.
Altomonte explained that before the recycling center was constructed in town, residents had to go to the Monmouth County Reclamation Center in Tinton Falls for recycling purposes.
Altomonte reported that it took about two years to create the recycling center, located at 62 Main St.
The recycling center is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The facility will be closed on holidays.
“We were able to secure a grant from the county which we put toward the project.
The recycling center is a one-of-a-kind facility in Monmouth County because it is unmanned and has 24-hour surveillance cameras,” Altomonte said. “Matawan residents will access it via a swipe card and a computerized gate system.”
Altomonte said that residents can bring bottles, jars, aluminum cans, tin cans, plastic bottles, corrugated cardboard, newspaper, mixed paper, metal, brush and electronics to the recycling facility.
