Monroe Township High School will bring back all of its athletic coaches for the 2019-20 school year.

This is not an easy thing to pull off anymore. High school coaching today is a year round grind.

But there is no doubt that it’s meaningful. So when a coach finds the right place to work, he or she is more likely to embrace this labor of love.

Monroe seems to be a really great place to work, which explains why there is no coaching turnover as we move toward the 2019-20 school year.

“Everybody is very welcoming and helpful,” said Monroe boys’ basketball coach Jeff Warner. “It’s just a nice place to work.”

“We have all the support in the world,” said Monroe wrestling coach Joe Eurell. “A great training staff and facilities and community support.”

“We get a lot of support from the administration and the athletic director, Greg Beyer,” said Monroe boys’ lacrosse coach Joe Yannone. “Great facilities. Two turf fields. And a great training staff.”

Warner is entering his third season as Monroe’s boys’ basketball coach, but he has been teaching at the school for 10 years. Eurell and Yannone are going into their third and 13th years leading their programs, respectively. They have been teaching at the Middlesex County school for nine and 20 years, respectively.

All three started working at Monroe shortly after graduating from college, too, and they have stayed that whole time. None have felt a strong desire to leave at any point, either.

Their happiness at Monroe is not just the result of a healthy relationship with the school’s administration. It’s just as much a result of the community’s student-athletes, who, according to all three coaches, are hard working and consistent.

“Our kids played hard last year and they came to work every day, and we get those kids each year,” Warner said. “When you got kids like that, it makes coaching a lot easier.”

“That’s definitely motivation for me to come back,” he added.

“The kids are great. We get a nice mixture from different backgrounds,” Eurell said. “They blend together and it’s fun.”

“The kids are committed to athletics and want to be successful,” Yannone said. “When kids work hard, you want to give them the best opportunity to succeed.”

Monroe teams win, too. In 2018-19, Warner, Eurell and Yannone all led successful squads.

Warner’s boys’ basketball team went 17-11 and reached the NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group 4 sectional tournament semifinals.

Eurell’s wrestling team finished 16-7 and sent four wrestlers, Michael Bilardo, Corey Fernandez, Nicholas Weikel and Gabby Miller, to the state individual tournament.

Yannone’s boys’ lacrosse club posted a 15-4 record, won the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament and advanced to the NJSIAA South Jersey, Group 4 sectional tournament quarterfinals.

All three teams are losing talent from those successful squads. But all three coaches are excited to face the challenge of rebuilding their varsity teams.

They have the infrastructure in place to do it, after all.

“Every day will be something new,” Warner said. “That will make things interesting and fun.”

“We’ve been training all offseason and I’m happy with our team,” Eurell said.

“I look forward to going to work every day,” Yannone added. “It’s the best job in the world.”
