FREEHOLD – Center Players Dessert Theater will present “Real Women Have Curves” from July 26 through Aug. 18 at Center Playhouse, 35 South St., Freehold Borough.

As the final Signature Series production of the season, the play written by Josefina López and directed by Bernice Garfield-Szita is set in a tiny sewing factory in East Los Angeles in 1987, according to a press release.

“Real Women Have Curves” explores the issues of gender politics and the Latina immigrant experience. The story is told from the point of view of Ana, the youngest employee at the factory. Ambitious and bright, Ana yearns to go to college, but cannot afford it.

“ ‘Real Women Have Curves’ is a moving example of how theater mirrors society and I am thrilled to once again present it in our intimate theater,” said Garfield-Szita, who last directed the play in 2005.

“The themes of race, camaraderie and women’s roles in society are timeless and will appeal to many. We are particularly proud to bring a production with these themes to Freehold Borough, which has a rich history of welcoming immigrants,” she said.

The production will feature an authentic setting, with antique sewing machines that were routinely used in such factories and have been carefully restored by volunteers.

Appearing in the cast are Judy Spiegel (Monroe Township), Linda Celiano (Manchester), Daisy Velazquez-Glasgow (East Brunswick), Carmen Melendez (Parlin) and Lazarita Perez (Bayonne).

Performances run Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are priced at $25 and $27 and are available online at www.centerplayers.org or by calling 732-462-9093.
