SAYREVILLE – Sayreville Public Library Librarian Aziza Haque coordinated a celebration of South East Asian culture.
Master of Ceremonies Ajanta Siddiqui led the event on June 29 at the Sayreville Senior Center, which featured traditional colors, tastes and sounds of the region in an atmosphere
of jewel-toned saris, harmoniums and tabla drums, and strands of flowers, according to information provided by the library.
Dr. Faruque Azam, president of the Bangladeshi Association of New Jersey (BANJ), introduced the region and countries of South East Asia before joining Laila Farzana in a recitation and love song. Dr. Arindam Chakraborty and his group, Rhythm-Spec, presented an array of music and song from different areas in the Sounds of India.
Following a buffet of samosas, pita sandwiches, and sweets, Martir Kachey Praan entertained with Heart Close to the Soil, authentic folk tunes and dances of Bangla with demonstrations by Ajanta Siddiqui and Shabbir Ahmed, according to the statement.
The event culminated with the audience joining in a dance to Bollywood songs sung by
Pallavi Bellwariar.
