OLD BRIDGE – Members of Silver Linings at Old Bridge joined forces with the Department of Public Works in an effort to “be part of the pollution solution” helping with the Clean Communities program.

Earlier in the year, Silver Linings at Old Bridge, an activity center for adults ages 60 plus, sought ways to provide seniors with additional opportunities to make a difference in their community. The Clean Communities program initiative stresses the importance of recycling and litter removal, with a slogan of “Be Part of the Pollution Solution.”

A Silver Linings survey to determine initial interest received 50 positive responses from members. Twenty members were selected to go to various parks and beaches around town twice a month to pick up litter. The group size is limited to ensure the manageability of the outings and there is currently a waitlist to participate. The group began clean-ups in April at Geick, Mannino and Veteran’s Parks and along the Laurence Harbor beachfront, which routinely gather 25 bags of trash per visit.

“My experience has shown that our members are seeking purpose at this point in their lives, and our Clean Communities program is a wonderful outlet for them,” explained Silver Linings Manager Anahita Feltz. “We are thrilled at the enthusiastic reception we have received from our members.”

Mayor Owen Henry said “picking up litter is more than just a way of beautifying our community.”

“We are trying to show residents how seemingly simple tasks can make real differences and allow them to take pride in the environment at the same time,” he said.
