South Amboy residents receive Eagle Scout awards

Scouts Jack Lukie, Zachary O’Connor and Scott Oshman with South Amboy Mayor Fred Henry celebrate their Eagle Scout awards at Camp Dill in Clinton Township.

South Amboy Boy Scout Troop 91 members Jack K. Lukie, Zackary R. O’Connor and Scott J. Oshman were presented their Eagle Scout awards during a Court of Honor conducted at Camp Dill on July 14.  

The South Amboy residents were honored in front of their families, friends, other scouting peers and Mayor Fred Henry of South Amboy.

Jack is a 2019 graduate of South Amboy High School. He will continue his studies in engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken in September.

Zachary is a 2019 graduate of Middlesex Vocational High School in East Brunswick. He will continue his studies at Middlesex County College in September with his goal to become a special needs teacher.

Scott will be a senior in September at South Amboy High School.

Jack’s organized a volunteer activity to restore and rehabilitate the areas in the front and on the side of Christ Church Memorial Hall in South Amboy, including the total reconstruction of their parish community vegetable garden. The work also included the restoration of the Memorial Hall sign and planting of new flower gardens.

Zachary planned a volunteer activity to accurately locate and index on new maps, the exact grave locations of deceased South Amboy Fire Department members. The project entailed extensive research, field work and map-making skills. All totaled, the project identified, located and plotted over 155 deceased members. 

Scott organized a volunteer activity to restore and rehabilitate the areas in front of both the church and the rectory at Christ Church in South Amboy. This restoration included the complete rebuilding of the garden surrounding the parish “Peace Cross”, removal of overgrowth and weeds in all areas, and the restoration and repainting of all light poles and handrails. 

Troop 91 of South Amboy celebrated its 100 anniversary in 2016. Any boy ages 11-18 interested in joining can attend a weekly meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday nights at the First Presbyterian Church of South Amboy on Broadway. The Troop also supports the activity of Cub Pack 91 for boys ages 6-11, which meets on Mondays at 6:15 p.m. in the same location.
