METUCHEN – Police are attempting to locate an older woman who allegedly abandoned two eight-week-old kittens wrapped in onion bags with a note “Please take free baby cat to your home” outside the Whole Foods Market last week, according to authorities.

Someone found the kittens on Aug. 26 in the morning, police said.

“The cats were picked up and dropped off to the Edison Animal Shelter for adoption,” Police Lt. Arthur Flaherty said.

Edison provides animal shelter services for nearby Metuchen.

“These two domestic short-hair, dilute-tortoiseshell kittens are cute, friendly and in good health,” Edison Animal Shelter Staff Amy Ray said, after a veterinarian examined the kittens.

Authorities at the Edison Township Animal Shelter believe this is the fourth or fifth time the same woman has done this. Ray said they wish the woman “would just phone us to surrender kittens and ask for help spaying or neutering her pets.”

“New Jersey has many low-cost clinics that offer those services,” she said. “She does not have to leave them as free kittens. Shelters like ours and rescue organizations are glad to help get kittens adopted.”

Authorities say the kittens were left by an older woman with short black hair wearing a blue top and beige slacks, last seen walking toward the Middlesex Greenway, a nature trail.
